Communication Skills for an UX Designer
(6 minutes of reading time) COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR AN UX DESIGNER It is essential to understand what the top communication tips for an UX designer are. But do you know why? UX design aims to ensure that all aspects of the user experience are well communicated. With this adequate communication, those professionals can clearly understand what their users want and need, knowing how to understand each project and listening to feedback to further improve their services. In this sense, communication is important because it helps them to better understand their users and stakeholders, as well as providing them with the right services. If designers don't communicate well with their clients, they won't be able to provide the quality of services they expect and, as a result, will lose credibility. The importance of communication skills in UX design has increased over time due to the increasing use of digital artefacts on websites, apps, and software development. This has also led to an increase in the UX designers' assignments, as they are responsible for maintaining key points of contact with customers and ensuring that everyone is satisfied with the final product. In this new content, we will explain more about the main communication tips for UX designers and what are the guidelines to improve your communication skills. Check out our full content below! COMMUNICATION TIPS FOR UX DESIGNERS It is unquestionable that communication skills are essential for all professionals in the workforce. However, there are some sectors of activity that need to dedicate even more to the development of these skills, such as the UX Designers. Before we even start enumerating and separating some of the main tips into topics, we can already place greater emphasis on a specific tip: don't make assumptions about what your stakeholders know and don't know and about certain topics that you may be asked during interviews or presentations. Never go to a meeting without having done some research in advance so that you can answer questions properly and at their “understanding level”. In many cases, those stakeholders end up being a kind of manager or product manager and need answers to every question. Below, see a little more about our main recommendations for you, who work as a UX designer, to further develop your communication skills and create greater credibility in your area of expertise. 1) UX DESIGNERS DON’T DO MIRACLES Although UX designers spend a lot of time analyzing data, which helps them to present a deep understanding of the issue at hand and to come up with recommendations that the team can implement immediately, the fact is that, alone, they do not work miracles. Just like any other professional, a UX designer also has its limitations in terms of creation and possibilities for projections. In these cases, it is recommended that you have a brainstorm meeting to try to better understand the project and, thus, ideas may come up. The interesting thing about all this is to note that there are very complex cases and, therefore, demanding a lot from those professionals can burn out them. It is essential to try to identify where the difficulty lies in the project, as it often may not be in the work performed by the UX designer. 2) EMPATHY AND POWER TO CONVEY IDEAS Empathy is an important skill for UX designers because they need to know how to connect with their audience on an emotional level. This task can be difficult as everyone processes information differently, but one way to make sure you're not missing anything is to observe your thoughts as you work on a project and then reflect on them. The ability to work with data can also influence how we convey ideas. It is important, therefore, that UX designers or copywriters are more attentive and understand how to convey them. 3) BE PROACTIVE Some UX designers aren't proactive enough during meetings, which can cause things to go wrong with the project. This causes them to become unmotivated and ultimately leave the company. They must actively participate in meetings to raise ideas, understand customer feedback, and be aware of all user characteristics. This will ensure assertiveness in the work provided and, consequently, will bring credibility to the professional. So, the way UX designers should act during meetings is: a) Providing relevant feedback b) Accepting feedback from others c) Provide constructive criticism to improve your design approach 4) LISTEN TO FEEDBACK TO FIND THE BEST SOLUTIONS When you're in the process of executing a UX design project, the first thing you should do is listening to your target audience's feedback. You shouldn't just follow your intuition or what you think is best. The UX designers must be able to adapt their work according to the feedback they receive from the target audience. If they feel they have a lot of complaints about specific features, they can take the time and redesign that feature to make it better. This attitude helped to create a series of novelties that became trends in the website development industry. As examples, we can mention the creation of game models for the colorblind people or the development of plug-ins for reading texts on certain pages for people with visual impairments. These are great success stories related to good UX work. 5) A GOOD DESIGNER MUST LISTEN MORE THAN TALK A bad UX design often means a frustrating user experience that people might not be interested in. Good UX projects are those that make people feel good and make using the product more accessible for them. Good UX designers understand their users better and often engage with them to get feedback on their work. Bad UX designers are too focused on what they want and don't realize how their decisions will affect others. Therefore, good UX design is often described as intuitive or user-friendly, which most often translates to a good user experience. UX DESIGNER The demand for UX Designers is growing very fast these days. To give you an idea, a survey conducted by NN/g (Nielsen Norman Group) pointed out that, between 1983 and 2017, the UX profession grew from 1,000 for around 1 million professionals worldwide. The survey also indicated a forecast of around 100 million people entering this profession by 2050. We must remember that the UX Design area is on the rise and the UX Designer profession is being well coveted. This is due not only to the good salary it offers, but for several other reasons ranging from flexibility to satisfaction for impacting the lives of many people through design projects.
