Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety and Stress

(8 minutes of reading time)

Nowadays we can consider stress and anxiety as two major problems of the 21st century.

The modern lifestyle helps to increase more and more stress and anxiety. We live in fear of violence in cities, in addition to a lot of pressure in professional and social life, we have an excess of information, and we are almost forced to be connected to the internet 24 hours a day. These are just few factors that help increase anxiety and stress in our lives.

The main symptoms of stress and anxiety are increased heart rate, tremors, dry mouth, frequent tiredness, insomnia, shortness of breath, irritability, difficulty concentrating, increase or loss of appetite. The difference between stress and anxiety is that stress symptoms are usually fleeting, while anxiety symptoms usually last few days or weeks.

Treatment for stress and anxiety should be done by professionals, but here are some tips so that we can avoid these two problems in our daily lives.

1) DO PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Stressful situations increase the level of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol in your body.

Doing at least 30 minutes a day of some physical activity brings benefits to emotions, a time to think about problems and find strategies to solve them, decreases the amount of cortisol, which is a hormone linked to stress, and even releases endorphins in the bloodstream that promote a feeling of well-being.

The most recommended exercises are aerobics. One possibility is to walk on the streets, on the square, on the beach or ride a bicycle, for example. If possible, join a gym to feel more motivated to make this habit frequent.

2) INGEST HEALTHY FOOD

Avoid ultra-processed foods as much as possible. Invest in a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.

Bananas, nuts, and peanuts are some examples of food that promote well-being and that is why you should invest in their consumption daily, increasing the amount whenever you are tired or stressed.

Food rich in omega 3, such as salmon, trout, and chia seeds, are also excellent choices because they improve the functioning of the nervous system, reducing stress and mental exhaustion.

Avoid, or at least reduce, your consumption of nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and increase stress levels. Alcohol is a depressant when taken in large amounts but acts as a stimulant in smaller amounts. So, using alcohol to relieve stress doesn't help.

Replace caffeinated and alcoholic drinks with water, herbal teas or natural fruit juices and stay hydrated as this will allow your body to deal with stress better.

Avoid the intake of sugars as they cause energy failures that can lead to feelings of exhaustion and irritability.

3) SLEEP WELL

Sleeping well for approximately 8 hours can be enough to solve many of your problems including stress and anxiety.

It is well known that anxiety and stress cause insomnia. So, a good way to get a good night's sleep is to minimize distractions and lights before going to bed and make your bedroom and bed a sanctuary for sleep.

Keep a bedtime routine. Try to go to bed at the same time each day so your mind and body get used to it.

Physical and mental fatigue is one of the triggers for stress and anxiety, so having time to get rest every night is a great help to de-stress.

To improve the quality of your sleep and help reduce stress and anxiety, you can do some relaxation techniques, such as meditation and mindfulness.

Another technique to help control stress is to work on the frequency of your breath. Anxiety and stress generate wheezing. And regaining control of your breathing can, in reverse, calm your mind. Take a few deep breaths when you feel nervous and this will send the message to your brain that you are calm, as a calm person breathes more slowly.

Another important point is to take short breaks to rest when you are very tired. That way, you will make your body recover faster.

4) MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL

We often feel overwhelmed with our daily to-do list, and this can undoubtedly be one of the causes of stress and anxiety.

So, the first step is to start prioritizing tasks and understanding that we can't do everything at once.

Prepare a list of all tasks in order of priority. Delegate to other people those who can be delegated. Organize what tasks need to be done right away, next week, next month, or when time allows. This way you will be able to manage your time better.

When organizing your schedule, don't forget to leave some free time for yourself. For your own relaxation and well-being.

Still about scheduling, another cause of stress and anxiety is having too much to do and too little time to do it. And even then, many people end up taking on additional responsibilities. So, it is important to learn to say no.

5) BE POSITIVE WHEN FACING PROBLEMS

Sometimes we are so exhausted and full of problems that we cannot face our challenges in a positive way. When having a stressful meeting with a client, you might just see it as a tense event or an opportunity to impress someone important. It's all a matter of point of view. Let the pressure help you do a better job instead of bringing out your insecurities.

6) ACCEPT THAT THERE ARE SITUATIONS YOU CAN'T CHANGE

There are things we cannot change. And instead of fighting and generating more and more stress and anxiety, accept it and try to solve it in the best way possible.

7) DON'T BE A VICTIM OF PERFECTIONISM

Don't confuse perfectionism with the desire to always do your best. Often perfectionism can be a cruel and unrealistic charge and leads to depression, anxiety and is paralyzing especially when we stop doing what we want for fear that it won't be perfect.

To relieve stress, it is important to reduce external pressures, finding alternatives so that work or study can be carried out more peacefully.

It is also indicated to find emotional balance, being able to better manage the time between work, family, and personal dedication.

Healthy Home Office

Healthy Home Office

(6 minutes of reading time)

While some companies have already returned to the face-to-face work model, many are keeping their employees working from home. Certainly, for many of our readers, programmers or tech students, the home office is indeed a constant reality.

Being at home all day puts us face to face to many temptations that we wouldn’t have access to if we're in an office. It is essential to have self-control and organization since you have to create your own rules.

Now, is it possible to stay healthy without leaving home? Of course, it is! And more than that, it is possible to greatly improve your quality of life. Read our text today to find out how to do this.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH AT HOME OFFICE

Here are some tips on how to improve your health while working from home:

1) HAVE A PROPER STRUCTURE

Working from home doesn't mean working in bed or from the couch. We know that's tempting, but don't fall for that temptation. As the days go by (may be even hours) your body will feel pain for not being in a suitable position for work.

You need a comfortable desk and chair, like the ones you have in your office. In addition, we also need a well-lit and airy environment. Working in dark rooms can be harmful to the eyes and closed spaces are a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria. The more suitable your job, the better your productivity.

2) PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR DIET

Weight gain has been a constant complaint from people who work from home. The combination of little exercise and unregulated eating can be very harmful to health if more energetic measures are not taken. The first step is to create a food routine: prioritize breakfast, lunch and dinner and have small snacks throughout the day.

Avoid industrialized, fatty and caloric foods, such as cookies, snacks, chocolates, and soft drinks. The secret is to not have them at home, because even if you want them, you won't have them around. Invest in seeds, nuts, and dried fruits as an alternative to during the day. If you have doubts about what to eat, look for a nutritionist so that he can put together a specific menu.

A good idea is to think of a complete menu for your day that can meet your nutritional needs. Buy fruits to eat as snacks during your workday, in addition to being nutritious, they are tasty. Also keep a schedule for your meals, so you keep your body regulated and don't skip a meal.

If you have trouble remembering your mealtimes, set an alarm to help you remember.

Don't forget to drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated.

3) EXERCISE YOURSELF

Maintaining a routine of physical exercise is essential for our health. Take advantage of this moment to get out of the house, sunbathe and even meet friends.

The practice of physical exercise helps to reduce stress and anxiety, in addition to strengthening the body's immune system.

Exercises can be strength, aerobics and stretching. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults should get 150 to 300 minutes of physical exercise per week (moderate and vigorous aerobic activities). This recommendation also includes people with chronic illnesses.

4) GET A GOOD NIGHT OF SLEEP

One of the biggest mistakes for those who work from home is to think that they can work at any time of the day, including changing the day for the night. Avoid doing this as much as possible, as it greatly impacts your productive capacity, whether you feel sleepy and tired throughout the day or anxiety at night.

Never forget that you need eight hours of sleep a night, preferably at the same time each day. Sleep in a dark and airy environment. Avoid taking your cell phone to bed before sleeping. The light from the screen in the eyes makes it harder for us to fall asleep, resulting in poor quality sleep.

5) TAKE TIME FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Regardless of the type of activity you carry out or your workload, always set aside few hours in your day for you and your family. During this period, take the opportunity to relax by watching a movie or TV series, reading a good book or practicing any hobby that makes you feel good.

It is known that people work even harder when they are at home office, so don't forget to leave some time for yourself.

The biggest secret to working from home is balance, so watch your routine and identify where you're going wrong and try more and more to balance all the points mentioned above.

How to Improve Focus and Concentration

How to Improve Focus and Concentration

Author: Juliana Müller – beecrowd

(8 minutes of reading time)

I have started writing this article and have stopped countless times. I look at my cell phone, go back, get up, drink some water, then get hungry, go back. I take a quick look at emails. I get up again, on the way back, another quick look at my cell phone, just checking if the soccer game has started… then I think… concentrate, you need to finish this task, whose theme is FOCUS!!!

It's not new to any of us that the 21st century lifestyle has led us to create new habits and change the focus of our attention almost constantly. In a fully technological world like the one we live in today, we receive a brutal load of data and information, which has led us to change our lifestyle.

We rarely see people, especially the youngest, who are not connected all the time. This means that we are constantly interrupted by messages and notifications from our electronic devices. We immediately look at the cell phone screen to check what it is. For ourselves and even for others, we argue that “it doesn't disturb, a quick look and I'll go back to what I was doing”. Really?

What we may not have realized is that it is precisely in this “quickly” change of focus that the danger resides. We are getting our brain used to constantly changing the focus of our attention, and then it becomes difficult to focus on one thing for a longer time.

In addition, to save time in today's fast-paced world, we also get used to doing at least two things at the same time: driving while giving conferences on speakerphone, eating while working, watching TV while answering messages, scheduling doctors at the same time when we attend a performance, or answer a child's call.

Yes, our brains enable us to do a mechanical task like walking, along with a reasoning task like talking. But two reasoning tasks together, what we call multitasking is a little too much, and ends up causing us to lose focus of attention. The most ironic thing is that we ended up “selling” this as a “quality”. I've seen job interviews where the candidate claimed just that, "I'm extremely productive, and I do a thousand things at the same time." Will it be? What is the quality of these tasks? Or what is the cost to the health of this professional?

It's unfair to blame technology alone, the most common scapegoat to justify distraction. There are also in technology, numerous devices created to help us improve productivity. In my humble opinion, used with common sense, technological resources can be great allies. So, we concluded that perhaps the big villain is the lack of common sense and the misuse of electronic devices and other tools.

According to the neuroscientist and associate professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Santa Casa de São Paulo, Carla Tieppo, people have developed a relationship of great dependence on technology. This habit has become irresistible, like an addiction. And with each interruption, it took us about 23 minutes to regain full focus on our original activity.

SO HOW TO MAINTAIN FOCUS AND IMPROVE OUR CONCENTRATION?

There is no magic. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it doesn't. Distractions can only be overcome with effort and self-discipline. And for that to work, we need to exercise that self-discipline daily. We must police ourselves. However, there are some devices that can contribute to this improvement in focus and concentration. Here I share with you some that I learned:

1. SPLIT YOUR WORK INTO SMALL TASKS

Our brain can only focus on a single task for 50 or 60 minutes. After that time, attention ends. So, the tip is to divide your tasks so that they fit in this time. Focus and don't stop. After that period, take a short break, get up, have a water, a coffee, check your messages. The pause is necessary and very efficient for the resumption.

2. ELIMINATE THE MESS AROUND YOU

Working, studying, or doing any activity in a chaotic and messy environment is horrible for our brain. The nervous system mirrors itself in the external environment. So, if there is no logic on the outside, it is impossible to organize the inside.

3. KNOW HOW TO LISTEN IN ESSENCE AND ATTENTION

When we focus on a single activity and listen to people with our full attention, our understanding automatically increases, and it becomes much simpler to understand even subjects that we do not master. It's like that class where we pay maximum attention. When studying, it seems much easier. Simple, but requires a lot of discipline.

4. EAT HEALTHY FOOD

About 20% of the sugar and energy you consume goes to the brain, making brain function dependent on glucose levels. If your sugar levels aren't controlled, your mind can get confused. Food balance is essential for the well-being of the mind. A balanced and healthy diet helps keep the organs in sync and the brain healthy.

5. EXERCISE REGULARLY

Physical activity increases synapses, creates more brain connections, helps with the formation of extra cells and the cardiovascular system. This means you transport more oxygen and glucose to your brain, as well as eliminate toxins. If you can exercise outdoors, even better, as you will have the added benefit of absorbing more vitamin D.

But the most important thing is to find an activity that gives you pleasure, with which you have fun. This will help boost the brain's social interaction.

6. LISTEN TO MUSIC AND RELAX

It is scientifically proven that listening to music brings numerous benefits to our body. A playlist with songs that you like, at an appropriate volume, can help with focus and concentration. In addition, it is important that we learn to "turn off" and relax, allowing the brain to rest. When we disconnect, we work a part in the brain called the default mode neural network, the same one that allows us to dream, and it's extremely important to keep us healthy. So, listen to music and relax!

7. SLEEP WELL AND IN ENOUGH QUANTITY

Sleep is very important to help us focus. With less than five hours of sleep, you don't get that strong mentally. If you sleep more than 10 hours, you can feel the effects of "jet lag". Watch your body and adapt. When we sleep, the memory connection is strengthened and reinforced, and what you learned becomes a memory. Quality sleep is therefore a really important time for memory consolidation and concentration support for when we are awake.

Of course, there are other little things that we can incorporate into our daily lives and as a result, improve our performance and focus on everyday tasks. After knowing this, maybe you are thinking about changing some habits, I definitely am.

Business Culture and the Home Office

How to Build a Strong Business Culture if the Office is Optional?

(5 minutes of reading time)

With the COVID 19 pandemic, companies were forced to adopt the home office and/or hybrid work model. With the removal of employees from the physical space of the company, the biggest challenge is now how to keep the organizational culture strong during this remote work.

There is no doubt that a company with a well-defined organizational culture helps to motivate employees, improve productivity, reduce absenteeism, and reduce employee turnover.

For this reason, it is important to have well-defined values, mission, vision, and company objectives. After all, when you have a well-structured and implemented organizational culture, actions are naturally shared and executed by each employee.

In today's text we will talk about how to maintain this organizational culture even when at home office.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

The organizational culture of a company, also known as business or corporate culture, it is a set of values, beliefs, behaviors, ideals, and ideas existing in a company. It comprises practices, symbols, habits, behaviors, ethical and moral values, as well as principles, beliefs, ceremonies, internal and external policies, systems, jargon, and organizational climate. Culture influences all members of that organization as guidelines and assumptions to guide their behaviors and mindsets.

It can be very well defined, based on the company's mission, vision, and values, or even be something more implicit that is part of the employees' routine, such as employees dress code, ways of doing a certain task, team spirit, voice tone on communications, in short, everything that is transmitted, experienced, and reinforced to all employees.

Contrary to popular belief, organizational culture is not only related to the internal sphere. It also influences the way we deal with customers, investors, and suppliers.

That is why it is so important to define and maintain a solid organizational culture, so that everyone shares the same company values, a single point of view that everyone understands and believes, what they do and what they preach, from the intern to the CEO. It is essential to understand that there are expectations from the company to the employee and vice versa. Both of them need to walk together so that there are no disagreements on either side.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE COMPANY CULTURE IN THE HOME OFFICE

In this era of home office, the manager has a very important role, which is to focus on communication with his team, because productivity, satisfaction, motivation and commitment must be guided by following the values of the business culture. It is the manager who will transmit the company's culture, bringing his team closer and nurturing the feeling of belonging. In this way, the team should work as engaged and motivated as possible. Communication helps to spread and sustain the corporate culture.

The manager must relate to his team and help to solve challenges, from work tools to the mental health of employees. They need to guide the work that needs to be done, ensuring that actions take place quickly.

There is a lot that can be done to keep employees close by, even when working from home, such as investing in training, support materials and employee development, as it makes people always up to date and close to the company's culture.

Here are some commonsense attitudes that will help maintain the corporate culture:

1. Keep in constant contact with your team to align activities, goals, provide feedback, etc. Thus, employees will feel supported and aware that they can count on the manager whenever necessary.

2. Strong internal communication, allowing your teams to be aware of the company's main decisions, keeping internal communication active through emails, chats, meetings and other digital channels.

3. Feedback, as it helps the employee to feel valuable.

4. Reinforce the strengths of your culture so that your team becomes more and more engaged.

5. Use technology to your advantage to facilitate communication, organization, and management of the work routine, as this gives employees greater security.

6. Improve the connection with your employees and ensure that they have the means and tools to establish a solid connection with the rest of the team.

7. Remotely or in person, recognition is always a motivating factor. Demonstrate that the company cares about the employee is essential.

8. Run employee satisfaction surveys on a regular basis so that managers can understand areas for improvement and provide the necessary support to employees.

The pandemic has brought companies a multitude of new challenges and keeping the organizational culture alive is one of them. How to maintain the culture with your employees at home office? The truth is that this is possible, more than that, it is extremely important, because it is this identity that brings security and motivation to employees. It is worth insisting that your managers connect more and more with their team and don't forget to reinforce the company's culture on a daily basis.

Programmer’s Mental Health

Programmer’s Mental Health

(8 minutes of reading time)

Nowadays there is not a single professional in any area of activity who does not live under a lot of pressure and stress, even more so in this pandemic period.

Stress isn't all bad. In the initial phase, it gives energy, vigor and makes the person more productive. However, when it reaches deeper levels, it can trigger physical and mental problems.

The line between good stress that helps productivity and bad stress that has bad consequences for our health is very thin as you can see in the chart below.

Source: vistratess.com

In the life of a programmer and/or a tech student, stress is always present, as they spend many hours in front of computers solving one problem after another. And there are many problems that take away a good night of sleep and increase stress in the developer's life. In the pursuit of exceptional results by celebrating and meeting the needs and demands of customers and users, developers' concerns also need to be heard

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CRAZY

In the book “It doesn't have to be crazy at work” by David Heinemeier Hansson and Jason Fried, the authors take a stand against what has become common sense in the business world, which is madness at work, with long hours, excessive interruptions, lack of time to think, overcrowded schedules, etc., which prevents workers from doing their best at work.

The book criticizes the “new” way companies work and that companies don't have to be crazy to be successful. Organizations must reorganize the way they work so that their employees do not deprive themselves of hours of sleep and quality time with their families.

THE RELATIONSHIP WITH WORK

Far beyond the spheres of the organization, which involve the company's culture and development practices, programmers’ mental health is directly related to their own experiences. After all, everyone has their own way of dealing with everyday stress and problems.

LEARNING IS PART OF THE JOB

It is very common in the programmer's work to receive new challenges, something that has never worked before or that involves some different technology. This should not be a cause for concern or demotivation, as the developer does not have to know everything and respond quickly about any programming language or technology. This is humanly impossible.

Studying and learning is all part of the job. So, you must accept that you will often need to stop and study some subjects from the beginning of a project, you will have to test and fail many times, to deliver tasks and move on.

THE IMPOSTOR SYNDROME

“Impostor syndrome” describes a pattern of behavior in which a person does not feel capable enough to perform a task, even with evidence to the contrary. This syndrome causes the person to minimize his accomplishments, and not expose him/herself for fear of revealing to be a fraud.

Imposter syndrome manifests itself in several ways:

1) Feeling of not belonging: often, people who suffer from imposter syndrome may think they don't deserve to be where they are. When this occurs, it is common for there to be a feeling of not belonging to the places which, consequently, leads people to move away from the groups.

2) Procrastination: the individual feels insecure to perform everyday tasks.

3) Self-sabotage: they create mechanisms to escape certain experiences in which they do not feel safe to play a good role. Therefore, they tend to miss good opportunities and end up regretting it very regularly.

4) Self-depreciation: if you talk bad about yourself very often, be aware or attentive: this is also an important sign. In fact, people with the syndrome tend to minimize their qualities and characteristics, becoming bitter and toxic with themselves.

5) Excessive self-criticism: it is valid for people to critically analyze their actions. However, this cannot become completely excessive with unrealistic evaluations. It's as if the person lost the ability to find good lessons from mistakes and punish themselves all the time.

6) Comparison: this is the main characteristic of the imposter syndrome. The individual can only find good traits in others and never in himself.

PERFECTIONISM

Developers love talking about programming best practices, studying different approaches to dealing with problems, testing new technologies, etc. The big problem is that all of this can be used for self-criticism or criticizing the work of other people programmers. These characteristics should be used to improve the work and never detract from it.

MENTAL HYGIENE

Mental hygiene refers to care and maintain the balance of our mind. Among them are maintaining a healthy diet, moderating the intake of psychoactive substances, such as alcohol and medication, avoiding toxic relationships and establishing future projects. Mental hygiene strengthens self-esteem, which is so necessary for us to perform the activities we have in our work with quality and for there to be harmony, calm, and cooperation in socializing with other people. There are several habits and many strategies to keep the mind healthy, such as: practicing yoga, meditation, exercising, having contact with some form of art, among others.

The point is, we often don't realize when we're reaching burnout, so don't wait for things to get worse to take the time to take care of yourself.

Some causes of stress and anxiety in a programmer's life are unavoidable. The programmer's day-to-day learning process is naturally frustrating and intense. But unfortunately, there is not much to do, you must learn to deal with these situations in the healthiest way possible.

The programmer doesn't have to work on the verge of burnout. It is already known that this is unhealthy and harms the project more than anything else.

Excessive stress is often caused by a lack of understanding and trust in other areas about how the developer's activities work, and the programmer feels obliged to meet impossible expectations. When the time that projects need is not accepted, and pressure begins to generate unrealistic agreements, the programmer's job is not to make miracles, but to communicate in the clearest way what is possible to get accomplished.

A healthy project delivery cycle leads to healthy relationships at work, which allows for good mental health for developers.

Empower your Brain

Empower your Brain

(5 minutes of reading time)

In recent years, companies and universities have invested more and more in brain stimulation. This includes aspects such as meditation, mindfulness, and other mental exercises that help a person to become more focused and creative.

As a programmer, you need to be able to put your mind to your project and remain extremely focused. So, if you're feeling distracted or unmotivated because the stress at work, it's best to stimulate your brain with some exercises that will help you think more creatively.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to develop better programmers. It's important that you evaluate what works best for your specific situation so you can take informed decisions about the ideal type of brain stimulation.

There are some very specific tips and guidelines that fit the reality of a large part of the population, especially for technology professionals, where we can include developers and testers as examples.

In this article, you will learn about top tips on how to improve brain development and further intensify your creativity as a programmer.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN DEVELOPMENT

The importance of brain development is vital to improve all aspects of a person's life and well-being. Brain development helps in better decision making, memory, focus and intelligence.

Improving brain development will help you make the most of your professional skills, reaching your full potential.

A programmer can contribute to his brain's development process by implementing, for example, innovative coding in his projects while creating an environment that encourages creativity and thought-provoking ideas. After all, programming is one of the most complex skills that exist, but it can also be one of the most rewarding. It takes a lot of practice and hard work before you can master it, which is why programming has become so popular among people who want a career in technology.

Below there are some tips you can do to help your brain be more dynamic and function more effectively:

1) NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION

Studies show that healthy food can greatly improve brain development. Foods naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients promote healthy development and better functioning of brain activities.

Re-education is a great way to improve your diet and overall health. This tip can be applied to people of all ages who are looking for simple ways to improve brain development.

2) PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

There is no doubt about the importance of physical activities in your daily life, including to promote brain development. The more you move, the better your brain will develop. For the body becomes stronger and more efficient, it needs vigorous exercise at least three times a week to maintain health and strength.

Researchers believe that, when you exercise, your body releases endorphins that make you feel good and happy, while also giving you an energy boost. You will also have lower levels of stress hormones in your body, which relax your muscles and help with heart rate variability.

Another way to improve your brain development is to have new experiences. A good example might be the practice of yoga which helps to strengthen muscle and improve concentration, balance, coordination, and flexibility. It can also help to reduce the effects of stress that affect emotional health.

3) PRACTICE AND STUDY

Brain development is an important step in the skill learning process. As a result, people interested in developing their brains must increase the time and effort spent on learning and doing.

As we progress, we are building more complex neural networks in our brain that can understand language, respond to complex problems, and learn from experience. This is because of the amount of time spent in practicing with different applications and with different skill sets.

Programming skills can be difficult to learn. However, there are many ways to improve brain development in a developer's professional growth process.

An important strategy is to study more. Reading about new technologies can help you keep up with the latest trends and discover what you need to keep learning.

4) RELAX

Relaxation is a powerful tool for improving brain development and cognitive performance. It also helps de-stress the body, which improves mood and sleep quality.

When you relax, your body releases the oxytocin hormone, which is also called the "happiness hormone." This can have a profound effect on your mental health and overall well-being.

Researchers are seeing the benefits of physical relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation and mental relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises or visualization techniques.

HOW TO BOOST BRAIN CAPACITY TO BE AN EVEN BETTER PROGRAMMER

One of the best ways to increase your brain's capacity is to focus on improving your cognitive abilities. You can practice mental exercises that help improve your memory, concentration and other cognitive functions.

Being productive when working with computers is important to programmers because they need time to focus on creating and developing the next product or new software feature.

You don't have to be a genius to be an excellent programmer. There are many habits and strategies you can use to increase your brain's capacity.

Programming is a highly creative and challenging field. While most professionals spend many hours learning different programming languages, structures, and paradigms, it's important to learn how to improve brain power as well.

Designer and Developer working in harmony

Designer and Developer working in harmony

(7 minutes of reading time)

SEPARATED IN MATERNITY, ATTACHED BY PIXELS

You can still hear that for some people there are obstacles and taboos in the relationship between designers and developers. Many believe that projects that have the two of them working together are more likely to lead to conflicts and frustrations. Either because one does not understand the work and effort of the other or because those professionals are often distributed in different areas of the company. However, it is increasingly clear that rapport between these experts is a crucial factor in the success of a product.

The first step to start integrating designer and developer is to change the point of view and understand that, to have a successful product, effective collaboration and open communication between them is necessary, after all, that both of them have the same objectives.

Before they work together on a project, it is important to ensure that the teams involved in both areas know and better understand each other's work.

Successful teams usually work within a culture of integration, promoting constant collaboration between the professionals involved in the projects. A united work team will find it easier to walk in line with goals and deliverables, developing projects with greater agility, clarity, and efficiency.

The idea of this text is not to point out any problems or blame developers or designers for every difficulty; this article is about keeping these different worlds lined up so that everyone is happy, calm, healthy and mostly productive. Helping to implement a collaborative culture between teams and achieve better results in the development of their projects.

JOINING FORCES

There is no good or bad side, possibly, there are different points of view. And it doesn't make sense to blame either party when, in the end, you have a bad product and/or exhausted colleagues. They always blame each other - the designer didn't tell, the developer didn't ask, or vice versa.

To avoid all this stress, you can start with a simple conversation to understand how each person's work. It's a good idea to sit them side by side and make them talk about each other's work. If they are working remotely, schedule weekly meetings so each one can explain his/her work to the other.

At first, this movement may seems strange but, as time goes by, it becomes clear that the more we understand each other's work, the lower the barriers between roles thus, contributing to the construction of a more empathic and collaborative environment for all parties.

Another approach is to involve developers in the creation process and decision making. When designers and devs work together, the chances of establishing a communication channel are higher, helping them to exchange ideas and solutions. In addition, to making everyone more informed and engaged, the process brings new insights into the product, generating more ideas on how flows and elements could work better.

The designer is often not aware of the technical limitations that creation brings to development. For the developer, it is not clear in his mind how the designed functionality or behavior should work. The idea is have the designer to create a prototype already thinking about how the developer will receive it, without proposing incoherent and outlandish ideas.

Sharing knowledge and experiences is more than valid if we are looking for empathy and collaboration in the workplace. Common goals increase everyone's understanding of the product's function and use, decreasing the chances of creating impossible-to-develop creations or unnecessary technical complications.

Well, but first, there are some critical points that we need to look at and then optimize the integration between designers and developers. Finally, to satisfactorily unite the skills of these two groups, it is necessary to overcome some challenges.

GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER’S WORK BETTER

Nowadays, there is little knowledge of the other's work, which contributes a lot for the company to have difficulty in achieving the best results. People often think: “designers draw screens and developers type code”. But the truth is that it is necessary to understand that it goes far beyond that, and the greater the level of knowledge about the tasks of each specialist within this product development process, the better the project result.

UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS PURPOSE OF THE PRODUCT

It is essential not to have differences in understanding the purpose of the product you are working on, what business problem it will solve and who will be its user. This alignment between developers and designers regarding the understanding of the product's rules is essential, then it will be possible to combine the skills of both professionals with greater efficiency.

STANDARDIZE WORK

When there is no well-defined work pattern that benefits the project in the first place, it is possible to lose productivity and face a multitude of obstacles such as excessive meetings, rework, and unnecessary emails. With a good management, developers and designers will be able to execute their demands in a more agile, precise, organized way and without wasting time.

COMMUNICATION

The best way to align designer and devs is with the good old-fashioned conversation. It's important that they get closer as they do their jobs. There will always be something that can be at focus for a better understanding of its characteristics. Furthermore, even being in different areas, the exchange of experiences will always be important for the organization's growth. All this interaction work will result in creative solutions during project development.

At first, this close communication can be a little uncomfortable however, over time, it becomes a valuable culture for maintaining a more empathic and collaborative team.

CO-CREATION

Often the designer does not deeply know the technical limitations that his/her creation brings to the developer or, the developer, does not understand very well how elements designed by the designer should work. Working collaboratively and communicating ideas clearly and constantly, this problem could end.

With the approach of communication between developers and designers during work, the company will be able to benefit from the exchange of ideas between teams. Thus, the trend is that new solutions will appear more frequently, in addition to make room for greater engagement by everyone.

In the business sphere, sharing knowledge and experiences is very valid and important for both the company and professionals. During the development of a new project, among so many tasks, the alignment between such important experts as the designer and the developer will be essential so that the product is delivered on time and with all the expected functionalities.

5 things a developer should do apart from coding

5 things a developer should do apart from coding

(6 minutes of reading time)

Being a programmer, despite not being considered a high-risk profession, it isn’t an easy task. Hours and hours sitting in front of a computer screen in long meetings, fixing some bugs and hating yourself when those same bugs reappear. Those are just some of the things a programmer must deal with on a daily basis.

There is no denying that it is harmful to physical and mental health to stay sit for long periods in front of a computer screen. It’s not a surprise that a number of developers suffer from physical and mental problems. Of course, sitting at a table won't kill you, but it can really harm your health.

Studies have shown that you don't have to do much to live a healthier and more balanced life. Fortunately, it's not too difficult to make some changes, all it takes is a little effort and goodwill.
Here are some tips on how to improve the quality of your physical and mental health without great efforts:

1) PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Physical activity is probably the most obvious tip on this list, after all, exercising regularly is something every human being should do. Even more a programmer who works sitting most of the time. Sitting for a long period of time can cause muscle weakness, weight gain, increased risk of diabetes and heart problems, and so on.

There's no need to become a marathon runner or even fitness freak but getting a little exercise will have countless benefits and will keep you healthy, fit, and focused.
You don't need to join the gym to stay in shape. Health can also be maintained by practicing the following:

a) Daily stretching
b) 20-minute home workout
c) 30 minutes of walking daily
d) Riding a bicycle

Exercise will also strengthen your muscles, often preventing the famous repetitive strain injury (RSI), which is a very common problem among programmers. There are many techniques you can use to prevent RSI, but exercise is one of the easiest and cheapest.

Exercising regularly has a wide range of benefits, in addition to keeping your body in shape, improving your physical health, making you mentally more resilient and mindful. This one is especially important if your job is stressful or mentally draining.

2) SLEEP

This is another tip that sounds silly, but it isn't. Spending a night working/studying won't kill you, but it can really damage your health if you make it a habit.

Sleeping an average of 8 hours a day is something that the human body needs to recover from the previous day and get ready for a new day. Your body uses this downtime to reset your brain and repair any damage that may have occurred during the day. Studies have shown that sleeping 8 hours a night significantly increases your focus during the day, improves your immune system and even increases your memory. In other words, sleep well!

3) INVEST IN A GOOD SET-UP

One of the biggest advantages of being a programmer is being able to work/study anywhere, but don't forget you will be sitting for more than 8 hours a day, that is, you must be at a comfortable table and chair, otherwise if it's not a suitable place, for sure will have long-term back pain. Back pain is a well-known problem among programmers and is caused by incorrect working/studying posture.

In addition to the posture you will be seated in, there are many other details to be concerned about, including chair height, the distance between the desk and the chair, and the distance between the mouse and keyboard.

You also need to invest in a mouse, a good monitor and keyboard, adequate lighting, and headphones. All of this can improve your work experience, diverting your attention from the pain to more important tasks.

4) EATING HEALTHY

A healthy diet guarantees the supply of all the nutrients necessary for our body to function. It is necessary to invest in low-processed foods and reduce the consumption of fats, salt, and sugar. In addition, it is not enough just to be careful with food to have a healthy diet, it is also essential to dedicate time to make eating a moment of pleasure, I mean, you need to stop to eat throughout the day.

A healthy lifestyle is not a complicated science. What we eat has a direct impact on our behavior and mental health. So, what can we do about it to improve our eating habits? How about eating a bowl of salad every day to meet your fiber and vitamin needs; include lean proteins (eggs, chicken, fish); eat more fruits and vegetables daily?

Eating healthy neither stop us from having a quick snack at lunch or eating candies in the mid-afternoon, nor it is necessary to cut out everything that's unhealthy from your diet. The important thing is that you are aware of what you are going to eat and when you are going to eat. This simple act can make a world of difference.

5) HAVE A HOBBY THAT MAKES YOU DISCONNECT (GO OFFLINE)

After long hours in front of the computer, the programmer needs to disconnect. Having a hobby, preferably one that doesn't involve using a computer, screen, and the internet, is a great way to relax and disconnect from problems. Enjoying the outdoors with friends and pets is a great option and your mind will thank you for it.

Disconnecting can often seem like a difficult task, but it's worth it. Also, take the opportunity to learn new things, broaden your knowledge, meet new people, and give you a sense of accomplishment.

Nowadays we are exposed to lots of information from the moment we get up until we go to bed. Our brain doesn't stop for a second during the day. It is not necessary to be a genius to figure out we need a break from time to time, so we can relax. By combining this with exercise and a healthy diet, you will have the ingredients for a successful career as a programmer.
